From Laura La Plante Herself
Personal advice, tips, and fun facts from Laura La Plante that didn't fit into the book :)
Happy Sunday!
While researching and writing Laura La Plante: Silent Cinderella—coming July 2024 with BearManor Media, I discovered hair, fashion, health, and beauty advice from Laura La Plante herself. In addition, there were fun facts about what she enjoys reading, doing, etc.
Some of this is included in the book but most is not, as it didn’t always go along with the narrative.
I thought it would be great to share a little bit more about Laura La Plante—the person and not the star, and what better way than from the actress herself?
Hairstyling Tips from Laura La Plante:
“I had always thought that it was a mistake to have my hair fluffed too much or my head made to look too large because it made me look shorter, and I didn’t have too much height in any case. I felt that if my head was kept as small and neat-looking as possible, my overall proportions would be better. I also objected to being marcelled and crimped and curled too much because it always made me look very ordinary. The curled look seemed to give me a face and personality to be forgotten, whereas the simple, natural hair-do, which brought out the shape of my head, did not, I felt, overpower my face. There were other advantages as well. I could do my hair wherever we were. I simply dipped my comb in water and combed through my hair. Very quick and practical. My hair has some natural waves.” - Laura La Plante

Beauty Tips from Laura La Plante:
“I was ahead of my time. I hated the heavy grease paint we had to wear in those days and the heavy cold cream we used to remove it, so, since there were no makeup men, I used to put on my own makeup, and I’d put it on as lightly as possible. I’ve never worn street makeup because I think covering your face with it only emphasizes your lines and makes you look older. I dislike the way makeup cakes around the eyes and in the laugh lines around the mouth. If you build a good skin from within—by eating the right food—the texture will need no cosmetics to enhance it.” - Laura La Plante

Health Tips from Laura La Plante:
“It all comes down merely to a matter of regular exercise and the all-important balanced diet. The remarkable thing about a balanced diet is that it can be used to attain the ideal figure, regardless of whether one is too buxom or too lean. The amount of food one takes should be regulated to the requirements of the individual. But whether curves are to be reduced or acquired, the diet must include three definite types of food—heat, energy, and regulating. Sugar and starches, among the least fattening of which are fruit sugars and crisp cereals, and bran. Proteins, such as fish, lean meat, white meat of chicken, eggs, and milk. Regulating foods, including celery, spinach, chard, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes. Vitamins in the form of apples, raw cabbage, lettuce, lemons, liver, milk, oranges, grapefruit, fresh pineapples. Roughage, of the least fattening sorts, such as bran, lettuce, celery, cabbage, string beans, asparagus. Then take plenty of exercise and drink at least six glasses of water a day, and you have all the real secrets of Hollywood.” - Laura La Plante

Fun Facts from Laura La Plante:
“Likes fattening foods. Dislikes the consequences.”
“Loathes anything conspicuous or affected, spiders and bugs, parsnips, letter writing, posing for still pictures, sarcasm, destructive criticism, and cleaning the bathtub.”
Adores sunsets, sunrises, sailboats, nectarines, tailored clothes, French provincial furniture, rock walls with petunias spilling over them, pewter, dining by candlelight, black velvet and pearls, holly wreaths at Christmastime, and her mother and sister, Violet.” - Laura La Plante
